India's Malayali Grandmaster S L Narayanan advanced to the second round of the FIDE Chess World Cup in Goa with a convincing 3-1 win over IM Steven Rojas.

The Thiruvananthapuram native won two Rapid tiebreaker games against the Peruvian on Monday. After a convincing win with black pieces in the first game, Narayanan was ruthless with black pieces, forcing resignation after 22 moves.

Narayanan will play GM Nikita Vitiugov in the second round to be played on November 4 and 5. GM Nihal Sarin, the other Malayali in the event, who received a bye in his first round, will play GM Stamatis Kourkoulos-Arditis in the next round.

World Champion D Gukesh got a bye in the first round, and he awaits his opponent for round two. Among other Indian aces, Aravindh Chithambaram will play compatriot Karthik Venkataraman, R Praggnanandhaa is paired against Australian GM Temur Kuybokarov and Arjun Erigaisi has Bulgarian GM Martin Petrov as his next opponent.

American superstar Abhimanyu Mishra will take on the UAE's Saleh Salem in round two and potentially face the veteran Levon Aronian should they advance.

The Chess World Cup is an eight-round knockout tournament featuring some of the world's best players. Magnus Carlsen, World No 1 since 2011, has skipped the event.
