Chellanam is one of the fasting growing tourist destinations in Kerala. It is a village located in the southwestern part of Ernakulam and this area was the southern border of the pre-colonial state of Cochin. Most importantly this place is very much associated with the history of Kerala. Today, Pokkali rice fields are an important part of Chellanam village. According to the traditional method, the fields are prepared for paddy cultivation on Vishu day in April every year.

What to see at Chellanam

It is said that there is a well in the village of Chellanam which is believed to have been built and used by the Dutch Army about 200 years ago. Kannammali Church, a famous pilgrimage centre, is located in this village.

Chellanam Port is one of the most beautiful ports in Kochi and is located in the southern part of Chellanam. Many tourists come here to enjoy the sunset view of Chellanam Beach. Chellanam Port is one of the important fishing grounds in Kochi. The Government of Kerala has proposed funds for the next phase of development.

How it got its name?

There is an interesting story behind how Chellanam got its quaint name. The Maharaja of Cochin had a captain named Tobias. The emperor gifted some land to Tobias, who had won a battle. Its name was "Chellavanam" and was an uninhabited forest area at that time.

The captain stayed there with his family. He had four sons. They all married and the places they lived got attached to their family names. So the one who lived near the Almaram came to be known as the Alumkal family, similarly, Valyaparambu family was called thus as they lived at Valyaparambu, and the family who lived near the ‘Kalam’ came to be known as the Kalathumkal family. The descendants of the son who lived near the Holy Cross are known as the Kurishinkal Family.
