Thrissur is known as the cultural capital of Kerala and it has a lot to offer the traveler. It is a shame that most people make a beeline to this city during Thissur Pooram, enjoy the extravaganza and head home without exploring its natural beauty.
Thrissur has some ancient places of worship, trekking options for adventure seekers, a rich tradition, and landmarks that bring back the memories of olden days. We start off with a must check out route for those who love adventure and long drives
Even though we are restricting this as weekend trip, each of these places deserve a full day if you want to explore them individually.
Pitstop #1 : Marottichal
Marottichal is about 22 km from Thrissur town. It is a popular destination for people from Thrissur, but does not figure prominently in the tourism map of the state. There is a small forest department office here and you can walk through the forest to the waterfalls. It is ideal to pack your own meals if you are planning to trek and explore the place.
Pitstop #2: Chimmini
Chimmini is about 20 kms from Marottichal. The forests are denser here – and so are the chances of seeing wildlife. You can go for organized treks here. It is again ideal to pack your meals if you intend to stay on for a while. Read more here
Pitstop 3: Athirappilly
One of the most popular destinations in the state, Athirappilly needs no introduction. If you are planning to cover this tour in a weekend, we would suggest you camp here. There are a couple places you can stay here depending on your budget.
Pitstop 4: Malakkapara
Right on the border between Kerala and Tamil Nadu border is Malakkapara. A popular stop for people who love long drives, Malakkapara is a very beautiful place. The tea plantations and forests on the drive will enthrall you. Malakkapara also offers a lot of places to stay.
