Neelakurinji flowers bloom in Gudallur: Key spots, timing to enjoy the blooms

The breathtaking hills of Gudalur near Wayanad have been transformed into a sprawling sea of purple kurinji flowers. It has prompted the Forest Department to officially authorise tourist access to the stunning blooms. Nature enthusiasts and travellers are now permitted to witness and photograph these rare flowers, bringing much-needed cheer to the region. The department has also announced plans to designate these blooming hillsides, technically located in Tamil Nadu, as a protected Kurinji sanctuary to preserve the fragile species for future generations. The flowers here aren't 'Neelakurinji,' but 'Mettukurinji' which bloom every eight years. However, the local people and tourists refer to it as Neelakurinji. 

Initially, entry to these protected forest lands had been suspended after reports emerged of visitors trampling and damaging the delicate wild shrubs. To balance conservation with the enthusiasm of travellers, authorities have deployed specialised forest staff to monitor key sites. These guardians are stationed across the hills to ensure that visitors can marvel at the purple blankets without causing ecological harm.

A resilient marvel of nature
The kurinji flower is a unique botanical wonder that cannot be transplanted or cultivated outside its natural habitat. Once the pollination cycle is complete and the flowers wither, the seeds are deposited back into the soil, where they remain dormant until the next massive bloom. Remarkably, these hardy seeds are capable of surviving harsh conditions, including forest fires, waiting patiently for the perfect weather to germinate. Forest officials are actively using megaphones to sensitise tourists, advising them to enjoy the view without disturbing the delicate plants.

Key spots to witness the spectacle
This season’s spectacular bloom has covered the barren hillsides and verdant valleys of several locations in brilliant shades of blue and purple. Key viewing zones include the Gene Pool Garden in Pandiar, Needle Rock (Soochimala), Chandanamala, and the grassy knolls of Kozhipalam. While the flowers appeared only sparsely in these locations in previous cycles, this year has delivered an unprecedented, widespread carpet of blossoms. Visitors are encouraged to explore this rare masterpiece of nature responsibly, ensuring they leave only footprints behind. Officials allow tourists to check out the spot only during the daytime.
