Kodikuthimala in Kerala's Malappuram, fondly dubbed the 'Ooty of Malabar', has been witnessing an unprecedented influx of visitors these days. On Sunday (October 4), tourists flocked to catch a glimpse of the spectacular sunrise and experience the scenic beauty of these mist-laden hills. Nature lovers, families, youth groups, and trekking enthusiasts started ascending the hills from the early hours of the morning to experience the cool climate and lush green landscape.

Why the sudden rush
The massive rush follows a recent administrative decision to advance the entry times for visitors. Previously, entry to the viewpoint was permitted only from 8 am. However, to accommodate sunrise seekers, the authorities revised the opening time to 4.30 am. This change proved to be an instant hit, as reflected in Sunday’s impressive footfall.

Record ticket sales and revenue
On the first Sunday after the new timings took effect, ticket counters recorded a total of 1,427 visitors, including 1,370 adults and 57 children. The venue also issued tickets for three still cameras, generating a total daily revenue of ₹70,525.

Call for improved amenities
With tourist numbers soaring, local tourism bodies and visitors symbolise the growing interest in the destination, highlighting the need for better infrastructure. Upgrading basic amenities, ensuring safe pathways, and introducing visitor-friendly facilities could further boost Kodikuthimala as one of the premier eco-tourism destinations in north Kerala.
