For the local people of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, one of the country's union territories, Mount Harriet - now known as Mount Manipur - is of extreme historical and emotional value. The spot, 1,200 feet above sea level, is one of the best places to get a panoramic view of the Andamans. A former colonial outpost, it was named after the wife of a British officer and later renamed to honour freedom fighters from Manipur who were exiled here in the late 1800s. Now, the island's government is all set to organise a tourism festival here, from November 15.

The Island Trekking Festival
The island Trekking Festival, organised with the assistance of the Environment and Forests department and MY Bharat (an online youth leadership and social engagement platform), aims to promote eco-adventure tourism and encourage local youth participation to highlight the islands' natural beauty and historical heritage, according to organisers, PTI reported. It also hopes to inspire Andaman youth to take up eco-guiding and adventure-guiding as professions, according to reports.

Timing
It will be held from 6.30 am to 9 am on November 15 at Mount Manipur.

How to register, fees
The organisers say there is no charge to take part in the festival. That said, only 50 participants will be allowed in the first batch of the festival, including tourists, tour operators, trekkers, and local youngsters. The following batches are expected to be held in the early months of next year. They will also receive a participation certificate issued by the Andaman Tourism Department. Interested individuals can register by November 14 by emailing andamantourismgh@gmail.com .
