An unexpected hailstorm recently struck Ooty just as it was transitioning from the quiet exam season into the peak summer vacation rush. The sudden weather shift caught both residents and tourists off guard, raising concerns about travel safety, weather change patterns, vehicle damage, and outdoor plans.
Ooty, known for its cool climate and scenic landscapes, typically experiences mild summer showers. However, hailstorms during March are highly unusual. Traditionally, hail events in the region are associated with the pre-winter months of October and November, when atmospheric instability is more common. V Murukesan, an Advisory Officer to the Tea Research Foundation at UPASI (United Plantation Association of Southern India) at Coonoor near Ooty, told Onmanorama that hailstorms are rare in the region at this time of year. However, as one has already occurred, there is a possibility of recurring hailstorms in April and May, he said.
Why this hailstorm is unusual
Weather experts note that hail forms when strong updrafts in thunderstorms carry raindrops upward into freezing layers of the atmosphere, turning them into ice pellets. While such conditions can occasionally occur in summer, they are rare in Ooty during this time. This makes the recent hailstorm an uncommon and noteworthy event, possibly linked to changing weather patterns.
What happened on the ground
Residents said that traffic slowed significantly as hailstones began striking vehicles. Many drivers chose to stop rather than risk cracked windshields or loss of visibility. The intensity of the hailstorm varied widely as well. Empalada (near Good Shepherd School) experienced heavy hail, while other parts of Ooty saw only brief or light hailstorms.
According to local police official PK George, a long-time Ooty resident, this was the first March hailstorm he had witnessed in nearly 30 years. While the town centre experienced a lighter impact, the surrounding rural areas reportedly faced stronger hail, leading to more disruption. In several locations, traffic congestion worsened as vehicles were abruptly halted in the middle of roads, highlighting the lack of preparedness for such sudden weather events.
Tourist advisory: Safety comes first
Visitors planning a trip to Ooty during this season should take some extra precautions:
1) While driving
· Hailstorms can drastically reduce visibility within seconds.
· Hailstones hitting the windshield can cause cracks or shattering, especially at high speeds.
· Avoid speeding — higher speed increases the force of impact.
· If caught in a hailstorm, pull over safely, preferably under shelter (petrol pumps, covered parking, or tree cover).
·Keep headlights on to improve visibility for other drivers.
While outdoors
·Avoid staying in open areas during hailstorms.
·Even small hailstones can cause head injuries or bruising.
·Use umbrellas, caps, or helmets if you must move outdoors.
·Seek shelter in buildings, shops, or designated tourist facilities.
Was tourism affected?
Fortunately, key attractions such as the Government Botanical Garden and the Government Rose Garden were not significantly affected. Tourism stakeholders expressed relief, as severe damage to these landmarks could have disrupted the peak holiday season. Since hailstorms in Ooty are typically short-lived, most travel plans can continue with minor adjustments.
Best spots to visit this season
If you’re exploring Ooty and the weather suddenly changes, these locations offer relatively safer shelter:
· Government Botanical Garden
Dense tree cover and designated shelters help reduce direct hail impact if there is a shower.
· Doddabetta Peak
The viewing dome provides strong protection, making it one of the safest elevated viewpoints during sudden storms.
· Cafés, hotels, and enclosed tourist facilities across town can also serve as immediate refuge points.
