Thousands perform ‘Karkkidaka vavu bali’ in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: Thousands performed ‘karkkidaka vavu bali’ on the beaches and at temples in the district on Sunday.

The Malayalam month of Karkidakam is one steeped in traditions and rituals. And for a devout Hindu, the new moon day of Karkidakam, known as Karkidaka vavu in Malayalam, is the day to revere those who have passed away.

Thiruvallom temple and Shankumugham beach in Thiruvananthapuram are very popular places where the 'vavu bali' is conducted. The Papanasam beach in Varkala is another place where thousands flock to offer prayers. Thirumullavaram in Kollam, Thrikkunnapuzha in Alappuzha, Aluva, Ivarmadam near Thiruwilwamala, Thirunavaya and Thirunelli in Wayanad are the other places which see a huge crowd on the Karkidaka vavu.

Elaborate arrangements were made at all these places. Temporary sheds were put up and traffic curbs are already in place at various places. The ritual started at 2.30 am at the Parasurama temple at Thiruvallam near the capital city of Kerala and will extend up to 11 am.
