Chunkappara, Pathanamthitta: The Urakkampara waterfall on the hilly part of Kottangal panchayat in Mallapally taluk has scope for tourism and even a minor power project. However, the waterfall with mesmerizing beauty is woefully short of visitors. Planned development of the area, apart from luring tourists, can spur the development of the area falling in the Pathanamthitta district.
The waterfall has a vertical drop of more than 150 m. There are rock spurs on which the water splashes and visitors can climb on these stone steps. However, it is advisable not to climb these rock projections during the monsoon as it may be slippery.
One can reach the top of the fall by travelling 1.5 km on the Chunkappara–Kottangal road and then proceeding 200 m on he road to the left to the Chemilakkal bridge.
The small streams from the Vanchikapara hill range combine together to form the cascades. Kottayam district lies beyond the Vanchikapara range.
The water from Urukkumpara reaches the Urukuzhi stream and from there it falls to the Manimala river through the Kozhukki Nooluvelikadavu which is 2 km away.
Experts say that a small-scale hydro electric project too could be envisioned here.
