The Kerala department of tourism is readying heritage centres in Thalassery, once the cultural headquarter of Malabar and the commercial centre of British Malabar. Visitors are expected to flow in to feel the history and heritage of Thalassery once the international airport opens in Mattannur early December.

Pier Road to turn clear road
The modernisation of Pier Road is being done at an estimate of Rs 2,12,54000. Interlock tiles are being laid on the 180 metre stretch from the National Highway to the Pier. Drains have been made on both sides. Granite will be laid on top of them. Decor lights will come up on the footpaths. Small parks will be set up at the beginning of the road and near the pier. Meadows will be laid and small statues placed there.
A plan has been drawn up for a coffee shop as soon as the former godown of the port department becomes available. E-toilets are set for women and men separately.
Open air theatre
The fire tank area, where water used to be stored for the fire station, will be turned into an open air theatre, designed in Kerala architectural style. The money granted for the work is Rs 60,76,500. Stone pillars, walls, a small stage and a gallery will be set up. The roof will be tiled.
The old fire tank will be filled up with water. Decor lights will be placed around it and a music fountain for entertainment. The godowns nearby will be painted up artistically and the road nearby will be laid with tiles.
Global standard
The Gundert Bungalow modification is being undertaken at an estimated Rs 14,34,000. The design would be such that visitors can walk around and see the place. A seminar hall is planned, besides a museum of global standards. A German study centre is also part of the project.
In the second stage, six roads on the seashore - Chalil Gopala Petta Road, Vadhyar Peedika Road, Christ Road, Customs Road, Mooppens Road and the Pier Road - will be laid with interlock tiles. Drains and décor lights are also planned.
Cuisine feel
The heritage street is designed to let visitors from outside get a feel of Thalassery's heritage, as in Mattanchery and Fort Kochi. Thalassery's own food items will also be offered, especially at the cafeteria.
