Book train tickets last-minute online, even after charting: Here’s how

Train tickets could be booked as early as 60 days before the scheduled journey. Tatkal ticketing, which is open only a day before the journey, lets you book your tickets for trips on short notice. Meanwhile, current ticketing is for those who are trying for last–minute train journeys. These tickets are booked after charting but before the train departs. You can book current tickets via IRCTC’s Rail Connect app and the website.
In the current booking, seats or berths that remain vacant after charting would be reallotted. Current reservations are available for vacant seats after the first chart is prepared four hours before departure. Passengers could book these tickets until half an hour before the train starts. Earlier, up to ten per cent discounts were offered for current bookings. However, from 2023 onwards, the same fares for regular reservations is charged for current reservations, too.
Here’s how to book current tickets via IRCTC’s app
1) Login into the app and enter the destination
2) As you are booking current tickets, the journey date should be the booking date. For instance, if you need a ticket for February 26, 2025, then the journey date too should be entered as the same.
3) The list of trains available on the route on the given date will be displayed. Choose the desired class or compartment.
4) Tickets would be shown as CURR_AVBL
Current tickets are more likely to be available on the less crowded routes. It must be noted that the current booking can only be made online. Besides, tickets that are booked like this are confirmed. Meanwhile, the passengers cannot change the boarding point for the booked tickets using current ticketing.
