Due to the token private bus strike on Tuesday, July 8, and the nationwide 24-hour general strike (midnight to midnight) on Wednesday, July 9, the public transport system in Kerala is expected to experience a major disruption. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced it will ply extra buses to hospitals, medical colleges, railway stations and airports on Tuesday. However, KSRTC services will be almost completely disrupted on Wednesday. According to reports, private buses are in service in Thiruvananthapuram, particularly in the East Fort area on Tuesday. Similarly in Thrissur, the 'Kiran' bus operator — known for usually staying away from strikes—is running services as usual. The services of their 16 buses are in the Chavakkad region. Regardless, tourists should remain alert when they venture out to ensure they return home safely.
Here are a few tips:
1) Your bus or train services can be delayed or cancelled. Confirm the schedule before heading out.
2) Have alternative plans ready in case you need to change your route or mode of transport, and keep your schedule flexible.
3) If you plan to use the Kochi metro or water metro for transportation, be sure to allow for a buffer time, as they are experiencing heavy crowds.
4) Check the live status of trains and buses on IRCTC and KSRTC.
5) Inform your tour operator and accommodation providers of possible delays and requirements for pickups or re-bookings.
What's working, what's not on July 9 (Wed)
1) KSRTC, private buses, taxi services, and autorickshaws will not be in service. Tourism-related transport services and hotels are omitted from the strike. However, stay alert to ensure safety and have a plan B if required.
2) Hospitals, other medical services and fire safety services are excluded from the strike.
3) Railways and other pre-planned travel services wouldn't be ideally affected by the strike hours.
