Kalpetta: The District Administration has lifted the tourist ban on Kuruva Island, which was imposed at the start of the monsoon. District Collector D R Meghasree said the decision was taken as rainfall has eased in recent days. The Island, located in the Kabani basin, are usually closed during heavy rains for safety reasons.
Tourists will now be allowed entry with strict adherence to safety guidelines. Tourism activities, including bamboo raft rides, are jointly managed by the Forest Department’s Vana Samrakshana Samithi (VSS) and the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC).
DTPC member secretary Binosh Kunjappan said operations, suspended for three months, will restart with trial raft trips across the Kabani waters on Friday. Only a limited number of visitors will be allowed initially. A larger bamboo raft is also being built and will be ready soon, he added.
