Kochi: The Bengaluru Intercity Superfast Express daily train service from KSR Bengaluru to Ernakulam will be turned into an express service from December 3 onwards. The train, currently numbered 12677, will be assigned the new number 16377. Meanwhile, the Ernakulam – Bengaluru Express’ number 12678 will be changed to 16378. The Southern Railway has already issued an official statement regarding this.

The superfast express train’s status will be changed to ‘express’ mainly due to the revised schedule released by the Southern Railway, and also because the train’s average speed is below 55 kilometres per hour.

Currently, the tickets are pretty pricey on this train. A second-class ticket, including the reservation charges, costs Rs 220, while it is Rs 790 in the AC chair car. The ticket fares will drop once the train becomes an express service, which will benefit a lot of passengers. Meanwhile, a section of the passengers has expressed objection to the move to slow down the superfast express train. They say that reducing the speed of the superfast train to turn it into an express train would affect hundreds of regular commuters.
