From May 9, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC ) will launch 'gender ticketing' on its buses. This is apparently to understand the average number of women passengers riding KSRTC buses, ahead of implementing free travel for women.

In its pre-election manifesto, UDF had promised five 'Indira guarantees' or welfare promises to empower youngsters and women. The key promise on it was free travel for women on KSRTC buses. Since October last year, ticket-free travel has been available for cancer patients on ordinary and superfast buses for treatment-related trips.

The deputy manager of KSRTC has instructed all units to implement it from midnight today. It is not yet clear whether the gender marketing will be reflected on the ticket; however, the authorities will be able to understand how many men and women travelled on the bus when they take the final numbers into account. As per the KSRTC union, more than 29 lakh passengers, of which 18 lakh women, travel daily on KSRTC buses. Last week, KSRTC had also launched business-class buses.
