Plus One admission process has left 1,13,476 seats vacant in Kerala, even after the main allotment phase, says Education Minister V Sivankutty in a press meet on Saturday. Excluding seats in unaided schools, 71,258 seats remain unfilled, with only 87,659 students applying for the next round.
In 2025, a total of 417,835 applications were received. Of these, 330,176 seats were filled, but 82,896 students who were allotted seats did not join.
In Malappuram, which received the highest number of applications (74,402), 58,336 seats have been filled. Still, 12,358 students failed to join after allotment. The district now has 20,736 vacant seats, including 9,752 in unaided schools.
In Kozhikode, 32,329 students were admitted out of 43,744 applicants. Here, 7,970 students did not join after being allotted seats. The district has 18,280 vacant seats, with 4,091 in unaided institutions. Despite vacancies, a significant number of students have not joined their allotted seats in both districts, indicating possible reshuffling during the supplementary allotment process, which is now open.
New applicants, those whose applications were rejected or left out due to errors, and those who did not get seats in the main phase, can now apply. Admissions through sports quota, community quota, and management quota under the supplementary phase will be completed by June 27, and the final list of available vacancies will be published on June 28.
Meanwhile, the state is expanding educational infrastructure. Under the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIFB), 973 school buildings are being constructed across the state. So far, 550 are complete. In Kozhikode district alone, 89 school buildings are in progress, with 50 completed and 39 under construction.
