Ramapuram (Alappuzha): Seventy-one-year-old Sudharama is a happy and busy woman today, after doctors at the Medical College Hospital here delivered her a bundle of joy more than a month ago.
Elderly couple Surendran and Sudharma had lost their son, Sujith, one-and-a-half-years ago. Following his death due to a cardiac arrest in Saudi Arabia where he had been employed, a bereaved Sudharma expressed a desire to have a child.
Doctors tried to dissuade her, citing her advanced age. A determined Sudharma, however, was unwilling to listen. Doctors relented before her stubbornness, and she underwent artificial insemination.
Months later on March 18, doctors conducted a caesarian session, and a baby girl was born to Surendran and Sudharma. Though the baby was underweight, Sudharma was overjoyed after mothering a life once again, and being able to hold the newborn in her arms.
Surendran was with the police’s telecommunication wing before retirement, while Sudharma was a former teacher.
A team of doctors made Sudharma’s dream possible. The septuagenarian was assisted in the delivery by Dr Lalithambika Karunakaran, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Prof. Dr. Latha Babukutty, Dr Jayaram Shankar, Dr Mary Praveen, Dr Pravitha, Prof. Harikrishnan of the Department of Anesthesiology, Dr Mary Kuriakose and Dr Nanna R. Chandran.
