Actor Sathyaraj has voiced sharp criticism of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and film star Vijay in the wake of the Karur stampede tragedy, which claimed several lives. “Those who make mistakes must take responsibility and correct them,” Sathyaraj said, stressing the need to make efforts to ensure such lapses, if unintentional, are not repeated. He ended the remarks with a “Che!” (perhaps expressing his disgust).
“Mistakes often happen without one’s knowledge. But a wrong done knowingly is different. Those who commit errors must try to correct them. They must make sure not to repeat them. If it’s a minor mistake, it should still be rectified. And if it was unintentional, they must ensure it doesn’t happen again. Tch!” Sathyaraj remarked.
The tragedy occurred on Saturday evening when a sudden power outage plunged the rally venue into darkness while Vijay was addressing the crowd from his campaign vehicle. Panic ensued as thousands surged forward in the packed grounds. At least 40 people, including eight children, lost their lives.
The incident has sparked a flood of reactions both for and against Vijay. Actress Oviya went as far as demanding his arrest, posting “Arrest Vijay” in her Instagram story. Hours later, she deleted the post and instead shared a cryptic quote: “To the wise, life is a dream; to fools, it’s a game; to the rich, a joke; but for the poor, it is sheer disaster.”
Her remarks, however, invited a storm of online abuse from Vijay’s fans. Oviya even shared screenshots of the profane comments, one of which read: “I came here to hurl insults, but after seeing all the abuses, my heart feels at peace.”
Actor and BJP leader Sarathkumar also voiced sharp criticism of Vijay, while actor Vishal demanded compensation for the families of the deceased.
Meanwhile, social media continues to pulse with demands for Vijay’s arrest. “Police, stop the nonsense. Arrest Vijay!” one user wrote on X, blaming his late arrival at the venue for triggering the stampede. Another pointed out that organisers had expected around 10,000 people, but nearly a lakh turned up. DMK spokesperson Salem Dharanidharan accused Vijay of being responsible for the deaths, reminding him that “cinema and real life are not the same.”
