In the wake of filmmaker Ranjith’s arrest in connection with a sexual abuse complaint, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) said it has full faith in the judicial process.

In an official statement shared on social media, the association reiterated its position that the Malayalam film industry must evolve into a safe and equitable workplace. “Women’s safety is a fundamental and paramount aspect of the film industry,” AMMA said, adding that it respects the ongoing legal proceedings in a case involving a young actor’s complaint against a director.

Ranjith, who was taken into custody on March 31, has been remanded to judicial custody until April 13 and is currently lodged at the Ernakulam Sub Jail. Earlier on Thursday, his advocate, Mohammed Siyad, stepped down from the case following controversy over his earlier role as a member of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) on the film set where the alleged incident occurred.

The director was booked under non-bailable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to assault or use of criminal force with intent to outrage modesty (74), sexual harassment (75), and acts or gestures intended to insult the modesty of a woman (79).

According to the complaint, the alleged incident took place inside a caravan at a shooting location on January 30, where Ranjith is accused of attempting to sexually assault the actor. He was later apprehended from Thodupuzha.
