Not all heroes remain heroes, and in the case of screenwriter-turned-director Devadath Shaji's 'Dheeran', one can add 'even if they have once won the most coveted President's Medal for bravery' to that.
The story follows a young man named Eldhose, who is one such disgraced hero. However, he currently works as a henchman for a cunning businessman, played by Vineeth, in Chennai. The plot takes a dramatic turn when news of Eldhose's death reaches his village.

Devadath's script has a certain balance. The film is not dark, though there are some heavy moments. Nor is it an outright comedy drama, despite some well-crafted humorous moments in the movie. Instead, 'Dheeran' is a mix of both, and the writer weaves in some convincing tricks to keep the tale engaging.

One of the film's highlights is its casting. Veteran actors Jagadeesh, Ashokan, Manoj K Jayan and Sudheesh are in top form on screen, their spirit resonating with the mood that was evident when they were promoting the film. Jagadeesh, unlike the selfish, money-minded brother in his most recent outing 'Pariwar', plays a more sensible, responsible man who sets out on a journey to reclaim Eldhose's body in an ambulance. He is accompanied by Eldhose's uncles, played by Ashokan and Sudheesh, who are in it for their own gain. The film gains momentum as their journey in the ambulance begins. Siddharth Bharathan, Vineeth, Srikrishna Dayal, all play their roles to perfection.

Rajesh Madhavan, as the central character, gets another interesting role after 'Maranamass', in which he plays a serial killer. The women characters, including Aswathy Manoharan, are given some bold strokes.

The duration of the film and the introduction of several characters may dilute the storytelling, but Devadath, known for writing the screenplay of Mammootty's blockbuster 'Bheeshmaparvam', ensures the film holds fort throughout. Mujeeb Majeed is well aware of the story's mood and ensures he brings the right tone to the film.
