A problem that many women hesitate to talk about, yet greatly affects their daily lives, is 'urinary incontinence' or the unintentional leakage of urine. It can occur during sneezing, laughing, or even lifting heavy objects, and is now seen in many women across all age groups. This is not just a physical discomfort, but a serious issue that affects a person's self-confidence and social life. Dr Thulasidevi KC, a cosmetic gynaecologist at Bhavana Healthcare in Viyoor, explains:

What is stress incontinence?
This condition occurs when the pelvic floor muscles that support our bladder become weak. When coughing or laughing, stress is placed on the abdomen, and weakened muscles are unable to retain urine. This is called 'Stress urinary incontinence'.

Main causes
1. Postpartum changes:
It is natural for the muscles and tissues in the vaginal area to loosen after a normal delivery. This problem is more common in women who have had multiple deliveries or prolonged labour.
2. Menopause: During this period, a decrease in estrogen hormone causes the bladder and vagina to lose their elasticity.

3. Obesity: Increased body weight can cause excessive pressure on the pelvic muscles.
4. Chronic cough: People with asthma or other respiratory problems may experience muscle relaxation due to frequent coughing.

New treatment methods: No surgery required
Many people refrain from even mentioning this condition to doctors for fear of surgery. However, today, it can be completely cured with advanced non-surgical methods:
● HIFEM Technology (High-intensity focused electromagnetic chair): This is a revolutionary change in this field. This treatment can be performed while sitting in a chair without changing clothes. It uses high-intensity electromagnetic waves to contract and strengthen the pelvic muscles. A mere 30-minute session provides results equivalent to performing tens of thousands of Kegel exercises.
● Laser vaginal rejuvenation: This is a painless treatment that does not require hospitalisation. Laser beams are used to increase collagen production in the tissues and tighten the muscles.

● HIFU (High-intensity focused ultrasound): This method strengthens the deepest layers of the vaginal muscles by transmitting ultrasound waves into them without surgery. It increases collagen production in tissues and naturally tightens muscles.
● Platelet-rich plasma (PRP): This method rejuvenates tissues using components from one's own blood. It helps increase muscle strength.

Prevention and exercises
If detected early, it can be managed through exercise and lifestyle changes. The most important among these is 'Kegel Exercises'. Practising this method of contracting and relaxing the pelvic muscles can help regain urinary control. However, if the muscles become excessively weak beyond a certain point, advanced treatments like HIFEM, as mentioned above, may be required along with exercise. Losing excess weight and following a healthy diet will also help prevent the condition from worsening. This is not a condition to be suffered in silence. Modern gynaecology offers simple solutions for this. The first step is to overcome this hesitation and consult an expert doctor to enjoy life with confidence.
