Singer Kylie Minogue had a very publicised first diagnosis of breast cancer in 2005. She was just about 36, and the public battle of the disease also helped raise awareness about the disease. At one point, many Australian women were booking mammogram appointments, and it was even dubbed a 'Kylie Effect.' Recently, the entertainer announced that she also had a second cancer diagnosis in 2021, but this time, she decided to keep it private. Kylie said that she wanted to share the information only at a time of her choice, but struggled to find the right moment. In a documentary about her, titled 'Kylie,' she also discloses how the cancer was detected the second time.

The second diagnosis
The 57-year-old singer says she was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time while on a routine check-up. "Early detection of the cancer was very helpful. There will be someone out there who will benefit from a gentle reminder to do their check-ups," she says in the documentary. Kylie's second diagnosis is getting quite a bit of attention on social media, especially regarding the fact that the cancer can return, even after 20 years. It can return to the same chest wall or breast, nearby lymph nodes, or even spread to other organs and bones, such as the liver, brain, or lungs. 'Inflammatory breast cancer' and 'triple-negative breast cancer' are the ones that have the highest recurrence rate. Breast cancer recurrence is generally termed uncommon, and the average time can vary depending on numerous factors.

Why they come back
a) The first treatment didn't kill all the cancer cells
b) Tumours, which weren't detected in tests, return stronger
c) Surgeries to remove tumours need not be 100% effective, always
d) Women who had their diagnosis before 35 are likely to get the cancer again

Why breast cancer comes back in some people
The Mayo Clinic says that experts don't know yet why breast cancer recurs in some people and not in others. Preventing breast cancer recurrence isn't always possible. However, self-examinations and regular follow-ups can help identify cancers at the earliest stage.
