Alappuzha District medical officer Dr PV Vidya has advised caution, as the number of Mumps cases among schoolchildren has been steadily rising. The health department has issued warnings and guidelines after the SNVLP School in Thumpoly was closed following the diagnosis of mumps in five students. The contagious period is usually just before salivary gland swelling and lasts up to 5 days after it begins. Although mumps mostly affects children, adults are also diagnosed with the disease. 

The warnings
• Infected persons should take complete rest until recovery
• Do not send infected children to school, as it is contagious
• Disinfect the utensils and other things used by the infected persons
• Teachers should alert the parents and health workers if students exhibit symptoms of mumps

Symptoms of mumps
• The primary symptoms are swelling below the ears, fever, headache and difficulty chewing
• Loss of appetite, exhaustion, pain and muscle cramps are the other symptoms.

Prevention is key
• Persons infected with mumps should drink lots of water
• Avoid sour drinks, including citrus juices
• Try eating semi-solid foods that are easily chewable
• Gargle lukewarm water mixed with salt to reduce swelling and pain
• Both warm and cold compresses can help relieve discomfort from swelling
• Consult a doctor if the symptoms worsen
