PCOS, which is now known as PMOS (Poly Endocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome), is a major hormonal metabolic condition seen among teenage girls and young women for the past few years. There is no permanent cure for PMOS, though with the right treatment, it is highly manageable and, at times, can even reverse certain symptoms. As it's a lifelong disorder, it's important to get the right treatment, focusing on a person's root cause for the condition. Dr KS Akhila, medical officer of National Ayush Mission at the District Ayurveda Hospital, Kozhikode, explains how Ayurveda handles PMOS.
Symptoms of PMOS
a) Irregular periods
b) Body weight fluctuations
c) Facial hair growth
d) Difficulty conceiving
e) Polycystic appearance
d) Hormonal acne
e) Hair thinning
f) Extreme fatigue
There can also be a lot more symptoms, like mood and sleep disturbances, skin tags, dark and thick skin patches and more, depending on the individual's PMOS condition. Ayurveda suggests lifestyle changes as the first step to manage the symptoms of PMOS.
A personalised approach
Ayurveda recommends a personalised treatment plan to make periods regular and to improve metabolism. This is done after identifying a person's specific symptoms of PMOS through the necessary tests for them. Treatment is often prescribed after analysing the patient’s nature, doshas(energy type), agnibalam(power of one's metabolic fire), food habits and daily routine. Patients are encouraged to follow the right diet that suits them after discussing it with their doctor. The right exercises that suit a person's body, a good sleep routine and stress management are also important to treat PMOS. Medicines and panchakarma treatment are prescribed as well, depending upon the nature and intensity of a person's condition.
