Basheer, a non-resident Keralite (NRK), has built a house at Wandoor in Malappuram district on a one-acre plot. The house occupies almost half the area of the land, while the rest has been set apart for commercial use in future.
The mansion has an area of 4,240 square feet on 48 cents of land, which is elevated than the road level. This allows wind to blow across the house and also for more sunlight to fall on the building. The house has been designed to fully utilise this advantage.
The highlight of the elevation is a sloped roof. Coffee brown colour has been given to the roof tiles as the owner has a special liking for this shade.
Natural stone and grass are the main features of the landscaping. There are garden plants, fruit trees and a driveway also. The porch of the house leads to the sit-out, followed by a foyer. Right next to it is the interior of the massive house. Deck wood is used in the construction of the passage.
Formal living area is the first space in the interior and a family living area is also provided. A CNC semi-partition separates the living area from the foyer, while wall paper covers the highlighted portions of the living area. The courtyard, which has been designed to get a good view from both sides, allows fresh air and natural light into the interiors.
Rain water falling on the house is collected in two glass cubes and is let out. A patio occupies the space to the outdoors from the family living area.
Most of the interiors are painted with white colour and vitrified tiles cover the common areas. In formal living area, wooden tiles have been laid. Malaysian ‘irul’ and mahogany wood are used in the drawing room. Solid wood and toughened glass are the materials that have gone into the making of the staircase.
Below the circular staircase is the ablution area and common bathroom. The stairs lead to the upper living area, which offers a good view of the spaces on the lower floor. A library-cum-study area has been arranged at the landing of the staircase.
Basheer’s stately mansion has a pantry kitchen, a working kitchen and a work area. It has two bedrooms on the ground floor and three on the upper storey. Panelling is done at the headboard side of the bedrooms. There is an attached bathroom, wardrobe and study space in each bedroom. The bedrooms have been designed with provisions to make alterations as kids grow up.
Faizal Nirman, who designed the grand house, feels contended for satisfying all the requirements of the owner Basheer and his family members.
