This Thrissur abode is a perfect model for modern, budget-friendly house

Premkumar’s brand new house at Akkikavu in Thrissur district, Kerala, is a classy structure that is built on a small plot, without burning a hole in the pocket. The owner works in an IT firm in Hyderabad. The house has all the modern amenities that are required for a small family of just three members.

The house stands in a 6 cents plot that was purchased by the family years ago. However, there is a well right in the centre of the plot. Architect Arun deserves credit for designing such an amazing abode by overcoming the spatial challenges of a small plot. Besides, he could limit the budget to Rs 25 lakh.

The structure has been built by retaining the well in the plot. The backyard isn’t too spacious because of this. However, the space efficient designs of the house easily overcome it. The flat box style elevation is classy and saves space too. The lighter shade of blue on the outer walls grants a classy elegance to the elevation. The wooden painted cement groves, meanwhile, are the highlight of the exteriors. Polycarbonate sheets have been paved on the balcony.

Designed in 1348 sqft, this fabulous house has a sit-out, living and dining areas, kitchen with a work area, three bedrooms and an upper hall. The interiors are designed in the open style which makes the spaces look and feel vaster. The living-dining and the stair area are all part of the spacious open hall.

There are two bedrooms on the ground floor while one more bedroom is arranged in the upper storey. Two bedrooms are spacious and have attached bathrooms and wardrobes.

The kitchen cabinets are done in multi wood finish. The countertop, meanwhile, has been paved with granite.

The owner could visit the site only a few times while the construction was progressing. Meanwhile, a relative had been overseeing the works. The constriction of this house, including the structure and furnishing, was completed on a pocket-friendly budget of Rs 23 lakh. The family is proud that they got the house of their dreams without breaking the bank.

Among the many factors that helped in keeping a check on the expenses, using locally sourced laterite stones for constructing the structure played a pivotal role. Putty has been used only in limited areas. The rest of the house has been painted directly. Purchasing the building materials in bulk, before the costs spiked, helped the owner save a significant amount of money. The construction didn’t get stalled even during the lockdown period. So, the construction was over in just under 8 months. Only the frame of the entrance door has been made in teak wood. Moderately priced timber is used for the rest of the doors in the house.
