This is the story of renovation. When Shaji and his family who were in the Gulf wanted to settle down in Kerala, they decided to overhaul their house built in 2001. So the exteriors, interiors, plumbing, landscaping, and compound walls were all majorly altered.
The designer provided a design with a Spanish Revival theme base that can be easily adapted to the existing design of the home. The client wanted to reuse the good materials available during the demolition, so all the old trees were reused. The old tiles have also been reused in the side and rear sunshades.
Since the old house was in a hexagonal shape, it was difficult to use some parts of the house. Therefore, they have tried to alter the shapes in some parts and make them more accessible. In the old house, when it rains, there is a problem of rainwater splashing. So the front sunshades were extended and turned into a slightly wider car porch.
A kennel is provided on the right side of the house and garage space is there on the side. The front wall and house wall are also provided with granite cladding stone. The roof is treated to reduce heat. Above that they have used trussed Spanish tiles.
The walls of the living room were knocked down and extended to the front and side. A planter box was added to the large front windows. The side extension has been turned into a courtyard and provided with large UPVC windows. It is arranged here in such a way that you can see the beauty of the outside landscape without the grill. Toughened glass is used for safety. A remote-controlled shutter is also provided.
Panelling was done with veneer to cover the beams in the extended areas. An Arabic calligraphy work done on CNC cutting is also provided on the wall of the living room. White marble is used in the living room and dining hall. The showcase, which was earlier in the hall, was changed to a new design with plywood + veneer. The handrail of the staircase was replaced with glass. There the walls were given a cement texture. A study area was also set up under the stairs. The old wash basin area was also renovated. Here Moroccan tiles are used for the walls.
A bench and 4 chairs were provided on one side of the dining table. The ceiling has a veneer design and a hanging light. UPVC sliding window is also provided here. Remote-controlled shutters are provided for safety. Sheer curtains are also used here.
An attached desk space is also provided from the dining hall. There is a chair and a coffee table. Handrail made of wood and glass is given here.
A Gazebo is provided at the back of the house. The Gazebo was surrounded by greenery because the client wanted a place to relax and work while working from home. There is a library shelf, coffee table, chair, and an office table for working in addition to it. Spanish tiles are also used on the roof of the Gazebo. Along with Narsapura stone and Cobble stone, Kadapa stone, and Santoor stone have been used in some places.
The house is built keeping the important spaces close to nature.
