Eapen Varghese decided to renovate his house, rather than tearing it down and building a new one, as he was emotionally attached to it. The house at Mavellikkara, Kerala was built in 1977 by his father. And, the owner and his family have many beautiful memories rooted in the dwelling.
The old house, which was 754 sqft in area, now features an area of 2600 sqft as new spaces have been added to suit the modern lifestyle of the family.

There were two bedrooms, a dining area, a kitchen, and a work area in the old house. The house required a spacious formal living area and more bedrooms to meet the needs of the family. So, a car porch, a sit-out, aformal living area, utility space, a living area on the upper floor,  and a balcony have been newly added. The renovation was planned by retaining everything except an old bathroom.

The bedrooms have been redesigned to welcome sunshine and cool breeze. Meanwhile, the owner insisted that the changes should exude the classy charm of traditional architecture. The new additions have granted a fabulous ambience to the interiors of this house.

The elevation is designed in the traditional style. A bedroom on the ground floor is now bigger. The sit-out and car porch too got a modern makeover. Meanwhile, two more bedrooms, a living area and a balcony are added to the upper floor. Eapen was impressed by the initial plan of renovation that was presented by the architect.

The construction began only after the family had approved the 3D images of the house. Some parts of the house were almost in a dilapidated state as the structure is quite old. The roof on these parts is rebuilt to make them sturdy. The thickness of the slabs has been increased from 3 inches to 4 inches. The windows and doors on the ground floor that aren't too tall have been installed at a standard height. Re-plastering is done at spots where plastering had come off.

Both custom-made and ready-made furniture pieces have been used in the interiors. Meanwhile, beautiful wallpapers make the walls incredibly attractive. The scintillating jali work, paving tiles on the front yard, and the compound wall add to the overall look of this amazing abode.
