The unique residential structure in Karunagappally in Kollam district catches the for its design, layout, exteriors and also its tiny structure. The house built on 5 cents of land, spanning 1100 square feet, has been gifted by a son working abroad to his mother in his native place. It's a single-story house designed for easy maintenance.
The design is tailored to a plot that is narrow and long. The roof is in a tropical style with two layers, giving it a distinct look from the side and the front. A portion of the front wall is clad with split stone for aesthetic appeal.
Every area of this house reflects the love and care for the mother. For instance, there's a handrail for the mother to easily climb up to the sit-out. Similarly, a handrail is provided near the kitchen for easy access to the outside. The house features a sit-out, living room, dining area, kitchen, two bedrooms, a bathroom, and an upper mezzanine floor used as a multi-utility space.
The interiors are designed with an open plan, avoiding unnecessary walls. This allows ample light, air, and spaciousness inside the house. The main door opens directly into the living room, which is furnished with minimal furniture and a TV unit.
The dining area is also minimally furnished. A wash area and kitchen are arranged adjacently. A full-length window is provided on one side of the dining area. The kitchen is designed for the mother's convenience. The cabinets are made of laminated plywood, and the counter is granite. A stove, sink, and washing machine are all installed.
The upper level is arranged by making use of the ceiling height. This mezzanine area is designed as a space for children to gather and play when they visit. In short, this single-story house offers the amenities of a two-story house.
