The Government Medical College in Pariyaram (PMC), Kannur, has become the first in Kerala to implement the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), a treatment assistance programme for Central Government employees, pensioners, and their dependents. The scheme offers services through hospitals, wellness centres, and healthcare providers empanelled under it. According to the CGHS website, it has around 42 lakh beneficiaries so far and is covered in 80 cities across the country. According to Medical College Principal Dr Syru Philip and Superintendent Dr K Sudeep, steps are also being taken to extend similar treatment assistance to railway employees in the near future.

3) Treatment costs follow government-approved rates

6) Karunya Health Insurance Scheme: Families possessing a health insurance card are entitled to inpatient treatment benefits of up to Rs 5 lakh per year.
7) Karunya Benevolent Fund: Families with an annual income below Rs 3 lakh, possessing a ration card but not a health insurance card, are eligible for free treatment up to Rs 2 lakh.
8) Inter-state migrant workers are eligible for free treatment up to Rs 15,000 under the Aawaz Health Insurance Scheme.
9) Under the Thalolam Scheme, children below 18 years who suffer from critical illnesses are provided free treatment up to Rs 50,000.
