A preterm birth is when a baby is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy have been completed. Various reports suggest that there has been a surge in the number of preterm births in Kerala in recent years. Prenatal care is essential as preterm birth may result in severe respiratory problems, low birth weight, risk of infection and anomalies in the newborn child.
Reasons
Preterm births happen due to many reasons.
Lifestyle: Extreme stress, anxiety, sleeplessness and nutrient deficiency.
Health issues: Diabetes, hypertension and thyroid issues
Habits: Smoking, alcohol and substance abuse
Previous preterm birth: The risk of preterm birth is higher if there is a history of previous preterm birth.
Precautions
Although it is impossible to stop preterm births, a few precautions would be helpful if you have a high-risk pregnancy.
1) Prenatal tests and screenings
These tests and screenings shouldn’t be skipped. Even the slightest change during the gestational period is crucial.
2) Nutritious diet
A balanced diet containing protein, iron, calcium, vegetables, fruits and vitamins is key. It is better to avoid junk food, overconsumption of coffee and aerated drinks.
3) Exercise and rest
Pregnant women can do mild exercise after seeking their doctor’s advice. Besides, good quality sleep and rest should also be ensured. Try avoiding a stressful work environment.
4) Prevent infections
Seek timely treatment for urinary infections, fever and cough. Even the slightest case of infection can increase the risk of preterm birth.
5) Say ‘no’ to certain habits
Smoking, alcohol consumption and substance abuse may be harmful for the foetus.
6) Peace of mind and mental health
Stress and anxiety will have adverse effects on the foetus. Counselling, family support, and a healthy lifestyle may be helpful.
When to see the doctor?
Do not hesitate or delay to see the doctor if you experience pain, water break, bleeding or stress before the due date. Experts say that both mother and child could be saved and ensure a quality of life if the risk of preterm birth is diagnosed in advance.
