Social media users must be familiar with the name Dr Shinu Syamalan and her Facebook posts which reflect the realities of the society. This young medical professor is lauded for her charitable activities among the poor and needy of Kasaragod district.

Saviour of Kadayakara

Erumely native Dr Shinu reached Kasaragod when her husband Dr K K Rahul got appointed as the medical officer at the Moukode Primary Health Center. She worked temporarily at various government medical colleges before turning to social service.

It was when she actively led the initiative to find solutions for the lack of basic requirements at the scheduled caste colony at Kadumeny, West Elery that Shinu got noticed for her dedication to society. She came to know about the problems faced by the people in the colony when, five months ago, Shinu along with her husband and daughter reached the colony to celebrate her birthday.

Lack of proper toilet facilities was one of the main issues faced by the inhabitants of this colony. Dr Shinu shared the pathetic condition of the colony through her Facebook page. She had even appealed to her friends to lend a helping hand to these people. With the help of her social media friends she was able to collect some donations with which toilets were built at three houses in the colony.

Birth of 'Nizhal'

Dr Shinu had started an NGO named 'Nizhal' to coordinate the various charitable activities. This organization has been supplying study materials for kids, food items, furniture, clothes, and even health services. Shinu's husband Rahul too has been supportive of his wife's initiatives. It was last month when the floods ravaged most parts of Kerala that Rahul got transferred to Thrissur. The couple was quick to reach the various relief camps opened across the district to offer their services, even before they settled at their new place.

Shinu also finds time to create awareness among the public about various matters through social media. She was given an emotional farewell by the people residing at the Kadayakara colony when Shinu reached there to bid adieu. Now, Dr Shinu's Facebook page is filled with posts and messages that inform about the various precautionary measures that need to be followed during the post flood days. Besides, this young activist uses the scope of social media to protest against the unethical practices that destroy the unity and integrity of the society.
