Kannur: Agricultural produce from Aralam Farm in Kannur, a tribal rehabilitation area, is set to cross international borders, with 250 tonnes of lemongrass shoots scheduled for export.
Kudumbashree has received orders to export the produce to the UK, France, Germany and Switzerland. Kudumbashree officials also said it received orders for 200 tonnes each of curry leaves, wild basil and green peppercorns.
Although lemongrass grows abundantly at Aralam, it has little demand in the domestic market. However, its tender shoots are in high demand overseas, where they are used as an ingredient in certain food products.
The decision to export the agricultural produce was taken following discussions between Kudumbashree and foreign representatives.
Kudumbashree also plans to produce essential oil from lemongrass and use the residue left after oil extraction to manufacture cattle feed.
