In a landmark judgment, a Dubai court has ordered an insurance company to pay AED 6,55,341 (approximately ₹1.7 crore) to a Malayali expat who lost his left leg below the knee in a horrific road accident. The payout awarded to Sudheer, a native of Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram, comprises AED 6,00,000 in direct compensation alongside additional court expenses.
The life-altering accident occurred in May 2025 when Sudheer was commuting to his workplace in Ajman. He was travelling in a company transport vehicle with several other workers when the driver lost control. The speeding vehicle veered off the road, mounted the pavement, and crashed violently into an electric utility pole.
Sudheer was rushed to the NMC Royal Hospital in Jebel Ali with injuries to his left leg. Despite the medical team's best efforts, they were forced to amputate his leg below the knee to save his life. This sudden tragedy shattered the family's stability, as Sudheer was the sole breadwinner supporting his wife and two young children.
Seeking justice, Sudheer approached Al Dhaheri Advocates (Aisha Al Dahiri Advocates). A team led by senior legal consultant Adv Shamsudheen Karunagappally filed a comprehensive compensation lawsuit against the insurance provider in the Dubai court system. The legal claim highlighted the permanent loss of employment, severe physical and emotional trauma, future income deprivation, and the immense financial stress thrust upon his dependent family.
The primary court initially ruled in Sudheer's favour, awarding him AED 4,00,000. Determined to secure an amount that reflected the gravity of his lifelong disability, his legal team filed an appeal. The Dubai Court of Appeal later increased the compensation to AED 6,00,000.
Following the appeal ruling, the insurer transferred the entire sum of AED 6,55,341, including all court fees, directly into Sudheer's bank account. However, his legal fight is far from over. Asserting that the received sum does not fully compensate for the lifelong physical impairment and professional loss, Adv Shamsudheen Karunagappally confirmed that they are now escalating the case to the Dubai Court of Cassation for an enhanced settlement. Even with a prosthetic limb and a long recovery ahead, Sudheer remains resolute in his pursuit of ultimate justice.
