Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir police has shot a letter to Twitter seeking details of an account that has been spreading rumours through frequent tweets affecting law and order situation in Kashmir Valley.
The Superintendent of Police, Police Component Srinagar demanded details of the Twitter handle registered as "WSK" "@WajSKhan" having Twitter User ID: "74964902"
The letter to Twitter, Inc, Corporate secretary in 1335 Market Street Suite 900 San Francisco, CA94103 US said: "@WajSKhan is spreading rumours through his tweets very frequently which are leading to law and order situation in Kashmir valley which in turn is a threat to lives of general public and that of security forces deployed in the Kashmir Valley to maintain law and order in view of recent developments.”
"The tweets of the abovementioned twitter handle could lead to clashes between various communities and hence have the potential toa aggravate the situation further endangering lives of general public.”
"As such, it is requested to kindly provide below mentioned details of Admin/User of above mentioned Twitter account and report thereof including the following details be submitted to this office immediately for further necessary action.
"The URL of the said account is: https://twitter.com/WajSKhan Registered Email Id. Registered Mobile number of user. Registration/Creation IP with Date and Time. Login IP's." And asked for "any other access details".
This came a day after four Twitter handles run by the ISI or the Pakistan Army were removed for circulating fake news on the Kashmir situation, the micro-blogging platform on Tuesday said it does not comment on the deletion of individual accounts.
Four Twitter handles have been suspended after the government told Twitter to remove certain accounts linked to people from outside Jammu and Kashmir which are spreading rumours on the platform,.
At least 8 Twitter accounts were reportedly circulating fake news and are "either being run by the ISI or the Pakistan Army".
The micro-blogging site took action against four of these and the remaining were also likely to be suspended soon, sources said.
There has been a spurt in the spread of fake news and misinformation amid continued lockdown of Jammu and Kashmir following abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution on August 5.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Monday dismissed as "malicious" a tweet by a Pakistani journalist about an alleged rift between the central force and the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
"The malicious content of this tweet is absolutely baseless and untrue. As always, all the security forces of India are working with coordination and bonhomie. Patriotism and our tricolour lie at the core of our hearts and existence, even when the color of our uniforms may differ," the CRPF had tweeted.
The Indian government is contemplating legal action against media outlets for reporting fabricated and baseless news relating to developments in Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier, prominent Pakistan news daily 'Dawn' went to the extent of claiming that over 10,000 people have gathered in Srinagar staging a protest over revocation of special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir.
