Yadgir: A 17-year-old Class 9 student at a government-run residential school in Shahapur taluk gave birth to a baby boy in the school toilet on August 27, police said on Friday.
The delivery took place around 2 pm and came to light after her classmates, who saw her in labour, alerted school authorities. Both the girl and the newborn were shifted to hospital and are stable.
According to the FIR, the girl, aged 17 years and seven months, was full-term pregnant and had been sexually assaulted about nine months ago. Initially under severe stress, she refused to reveal details but later identified the accused as a 28-year-old man. Police said she will be counselled once declared fit by doctors.
The incident was not reported immediately by the school staff or even the girl’s brother, who was informed right after the delivery. A case has been registered under the POCSO Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the accused.
Cases were also filed against four others including the hostel warden, school principal, staff nurse and the girl’s brother for failing to inform authorities.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society (KREIS) suspended the principal, hostel warden and two other staff members for negligence and dereliction of duty.
