New Delhi: The Unnao rape case has triggered fresh protests as the Delhi High Court suspended the jail term of former BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar in the case. On Friday, a large group of protesters — including women’s rights activists and the mother of the Unnao rape survivor — protested outside the court.

Carrying placards, the protesters chanted slogans such as “Balatkariyo ko sanrakshan dena band kro” (stop protecting rapists), voicing support for the survivor.

Women activists from the All India Democratic Women’s Association joined the protest, along with activist Yogita Bhayana and the survivor’s mother.

Speaking to PTI, the survivor’s mother said she came to the court because of the immense hardship her daughter has gone through.

“I am not blaming the entire high court, only the two judges whose decision has broken our trust,” she said.

She added that while earlier judges had given the family justice, the accused has now been granted bail.

“This is unjust for our family. We will move the Supreme Court, because I still have faith in it,” she said.

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court granted Sengar bail while his appeal against his December 2019 conviction is pending, even though he is serving a life sentence in the rape case.

The court directed that the former BJP legislator must stay at least five kilometres away from the survivor’s home, must not intimidate her or her mother, and warned that any breach would automatically cancel his bail.

However, Sengar will continue to remain in custody because he is also serving a 10-year sentence in the case related to the custodial death of the survivor’s father, and he has not received bail in that matter.
