Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Saturday appointed actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and handed over the appointment letter at the Raj Bhavan.

The development came after Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) extended support to TVK, enabling the party to secure a majority in the Assembly. Vijay later met the Governor and submitted letters of unconditional support from allied parties. He was accompanied by K Selvaperunthagai and leaders of supporting parties, including CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam.

With the support of VCK and IUML, which have two MLAs each, TVK’s tally in the 234-member Assembly rose to 120, crossing the majority mark comfortably. Sources indicated that the swearing-in ceremony is likely to be held on Sunday.

This was Vijay’s fourth visit to the Raj Bhavan in recent days to demonstrate that he commanded majority support in the Assembly
Meanwhile, TVK workers celebrated the development by bursting crackers, distributing sweets and gathering in large numbers at the party headquarters.
