Thiruvananthapuram: Budgets of families are in disarray as prices of essential goods are skyrocketing in Kerala. Latest is the steep increase in prices of rice. Champa rice sells for Rs 55 a kg and Jaya, at Rs 45. Shallot prices range between Rs 140 and Rs 145. Experts blame the sharp increase on the fall in production.
Jaya rice, the fastest-selling variety in Kerala, shot up from Rs 40 in the past week. Raw rice prices went up from Rs 22 to Rs 26 in the past two days. Just behind is Kabuli gram at Rs 180 a kg. Local gram, not to lag behind, is up from Rs 92 to Rs 96.
Shallot price rise is being attributed to the shortfall in production in Maharashtra. Potato prices went up by two rupees in two days, hitting Rs 25 a kg.
Figures reveal that prices of all essential commodities registered a huge jump in the past one year. For example, coconut oil was just Rs 95 at this time last year. Tamarind, cumin seeds, garlic etc are among other commodities that have become costlier.
Kerala food minister P. Thilothaman blames some traders for the increase in prices and warns of strict action if they hike prices. The minister admits that prices are going up, but argues that it is not severe. He also promises measures to control prices.
