Kochi/Kozhikode/Kottayam: Binu Krishnan’s life was snuffed out abruptly but the young man’s legacy will live on in four lives. The 35-year-old marketing professional from Kochi died in Aster Medicity last Saturday. His heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas have given a fresh lease of life to four terminally ill patients in various parts of Kerala.

Krishnan was riding a motorcycle with a friend when he complained of severe headache and was admitted to hospital on Saturday. He was declared brain-dead on Thursday. The hospital authorities intimated the death to the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (Mritasanjeevani) representatives, who got in touch with the deceased person’s wife and brother.

As soon as the relatives agreed to donate Krishnan’s organs, his heart was flown in an helicopter to the Karipur airport, from where it was taken to the Metromed International Cardiac Center in Kozhikode. The heart was transplanted into Sinoj from Kozhikode.

One of Krishnan’s kidneys was transplanted into V.G. Jayakumar, a patient undergoing treatment in the Medical College Hospital in Kottayam. The other kidney and pancreas saved the life of Soorya Ashok in Amruta Hospital.

The liver went to Suresh Kumar in Aster Medicity.

The organ harvesting started around 10:30 am on Friday. The team was led by Dr Mathew Jacob. Noushif, Rohit, Shishir, Ashok, Binoj, Jones and Abhishek were the other doctors in the team.

Krishnan survived by wife Sini and a four-year-old son.

Health minister K.K. Shylaja and health additional chief secretary Rajeev Sadanandan interfered to fast-track the process of organ donation. The district collectors and police chiefs in Ernakulam, Malappuram and Kozhikode coordinated to form a green corridor to transport the heart quickly to the Kozhikode hospital.

Mritasanjeevani state coordinator Dr Thomas Mathew, nodal officer Dr Noble Gracious and coordinator S. Saranya made the necessary arrangements for the organ donation.
