Thiruvananthapuram: The state government allowed a life term convict to visit his home because of political considerations linked to the solar scam, it has emerged.

Solar scam prime accused Saritha S Nair's former partner Biju Radhakrishnan, serving a life term after being convicted of the murder of his first wife, visited his home last week with special permission from the state government. The convict, who is not even eligible for parole, went to his house in Puthur escorted by two policemen.

Biju had sought permission to visit his ailing mother. Jail authorities sought a report from the police in response to his request, and the clearance came swiftly, granting permission saying there was no security issue.

Jail authorities said Biju was sent under police escort because he was not eligible for parole.

The jail authorities could not even explain who were the people the convict had met during his journey either way.

It is understood that some top officers at the state police headquarters want Biju to be 'taken into confidence' for future action that the police plan to take on the solar commission probe conducted by a retired judge. It is alleged that the out-of-the way concession given to Biju was prompted by this consideration.

Biju's stand could become crucial as the police proceed on the judicial inquiry report.

Saritha's former lawyer Feni Balakrishnan had alleged that four pages were added to her letter as per suggestions from former minister and LDF ally K B Ganesh Kumar. Saritha's letter raises serious allegations against UDF leaders and has become the basis of further police proceedings. However, after the lawyer's allegations were aired, the police have refrained from recording Saritha's testimony. The Crime Branch police have frozen inquiry on two cases registered during the UDF government's term on the basis of Saritha's complaint.
