Kerala to get new high-tech vehicle monitoring system

Kottayam: Soon, no vehicle will be able to escape camera eyes in Kerala. Police have decided to install the most-modern all-vehicle automatic number plate recognition system at 35 spots in nine police districts across the state.

The technology, which would cost the state Rs 20 crore, can accurately click photos of vehicles that are speeding at even 240 kmph. At present, the cameras installed on national highways and other roads can only detect vehicles if they are speeding above the set limit.

In the first phase of the project, the high-tech cameras will be installed in Thiruvananthapuram, Kasaragod, Thrissur Rural, Thrissur City, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kottayam, Kannur and Alappuzha.

A camera costs a minimum of Rs 6 lakh. The cameras will be installed on approach roads to cities and within cities. If cops want to check details of a vehicle, they just have to provide the vehicle number to the control room. The full route details of the vehicle will be available within seconds.

These details will be sent to the mobile phones of the officer in charge of security and senior police officers.

Keltron will be installing the cameras. A study was conducted, and a report has been submitted, said Keltron project manager and marketing head SP Gopakumar.

Police believe that the new vehicle monitoring system can curb crimes within cities to a large extent. Besides, cops can also get exact details road accidents.
