Rajakumari: A maimed stray dog in Pooppara town found a bunch of saviours thanks to social media. The dog was caught and subjected to a surgery to amputate the gangrenous part of its foreleg on Tuesday.
The stray named Chinnu has been a constant presence in the town for two years at least. The animal was spotted with a severed left forearm by Arun Pananal. The social activist took a photo of the miserable animal and posted it on Facebook.
The photo was widely shared and many animal lovers offered solace. A WhatsApp group of animal lovers based in Tiruvalla launched rescue operations under the leadership of Alphonsa Sebastian and Sinu P Sabu.
Sebastian and Sabu got in touch with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Idukki. Members of the group went to Pooppara three times but the terrified Chinnu gave them the slip.
The WhatsApp group roped in one of their members, an expert dog catcher named K N Vaisakhan from Edathua, to rescue Chinnu.
The stray was brought to the ABC Centre at Brahmapuram, where it was operated upon. The WhatsApp group members raised money for the treatment of the dog.
Chinnu will have to spend two weeks at the shelter while its wound is healed. The rescuers said that they planned to let out the dog in Pooppara after it recovered.
