As Kerala cops mull case, PC George withdraws statements against nun

Kottayam: As the clamour grew over independent MLA PC George's obscene comments against the victim nun in the Jalandhar bishop case, he said on Wednesday that he was 'withdrawing his statements.'

"I inadvertently used a term against the victim. Such a term should never be used against a woman. It was an emotional outburst," the Poonjar MLA said. George, however, did not offer an apology verbatim.

Reports said the outspoken legislator withdrew his statement as the police were set to take a case against him over the remarks. He even went on to say that Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal should be arrested if he was found guilty.

George's remarks had drawn flak from various quarters and also triggered a social media campaign, #VaaymooduPCGeorge (Shut up, PC George).

The National Commission for Women (NCW) had summoned the Kerala MLA for calling the nun 'a woman of questionable character.'

Lashing out George for using 'abusive language' against the rape survivor, NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma had said such incidents were shameful. However, George refused to be 'cowed down' by the NCW summons and said he would appear before the panel if it paid for his journey to Delhi. The NCW had retorted that it would do so if the legislator made a written request stating his inability to fund travel. George had also stated that he was examining if it was within the powers of the NCW to summon a legislator.

In July, the nun filed a complaint with the Kottayam district police chief, alleging that the Jalandhar bishop and had engaged her in a physical relation multiple times at a small town near Kottayam between 2014 and 2016. Mulakkal claimed innocence and said the truth would come out in the police investigation.
