Thiruvananthapuram: The northeast monsoon will arrive in Kerala a bit late this year, likely after October 15. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected an average of 480 mm rain during the northeast monsoon which is locally known as thulavarsham.

However, the sporadic rain several parts of the state is witnessing now may continue until Thursday (Oct 4). Heavy rain has been forecast for Tuesday.

The IMD has warned of the possibility of low pressure forming on Saturday, October 6, over the Arabian Sea near Lakshadweep and Maldives. It is expected to intensify and move towards the northwest. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has warned fishermen not to venture out into the Arabian Sea from Saturday as the sea could get rough.

The Fisheries Department, Coastal Police, Marine Enforcement and the district disaster management units have been asked to keep advising the fishermen on the situation. Those who are already at sea have should be asked to return to the coast before the 5th. Besides, sea ambulances and rescue boats have to be kept ready.
