Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government will provide free handloom uniform to students before the start of the next academic year.
Government school students from class 1 to 7 and aided school students of class 1 to 4 will be given the free uniforms as is the established practice.
About 42 lakh metre of cloth is needed to stitch the uniforms for 8.5 lakh students in the state for the upcoming academic year.
Kerala State Handloom Development Corporation Ltd (KSHDC), which is popular for its brand name HANVEEV, will distribute handloom uniform cloths from Kasaragod to Thrissur districts. Meanwhile, Handloom Weaver's Co Operative Society Ltd (HanteX) will distribute them in schools from Ernakulam to Thiruvananthapuram districts.
The cloth materials are being sourced from the state's handloom units.
Depending on each school's colour code, clothes would be provided to Assistant Education Officers (AEOs). The distribution of the cloth material has already begun.
Handloom workers have been given Rs 100 crore. Most of the thread needed for the manufacturing has been made at the spinning mills in the state. The entire cost of these threads comes around to Rs 25 crore.
