Transgender Sajana Shaji hospitalised after suspected suicide bid

Kochi: Transgender Sajana Shaji has been admitted to a hospital in Kochi after she reportedly took an overdose of pills.

Sajana, who sold biriyanis on the wayside for a living, had faced attacks on social media. The police said they suspected that Sajana had tried to take her own life as she was mentally distressed over the controversies.

A native of Kottayam, Sajana had reached Kochi 13 years ago. During those days, she was even forced to beg on trains for survival. But then over the years, she began to earn her living through hard work.

Even the COVID-19 crisis failed to break Sajana’s resolve.

Sajana worked at an online delivery shop. However, she lost her job as the pandemic situation worsened. Then Sajana started selling biriyani packets by the wayside at Irumpanam in Thrippunithura three months ago. Sajana started this venture, so that she would be able to provide for others with her.

An audio clip purportedly between Sajana and another person was widely circulated on social media over the past few days. Allegations were raised that Sajana was attempting to fleece money. Sajana had been mentally distressed over this allegation.
