Kannur: A man and his son died after their car veered out of control and fell into a well at Nellikunnu in Kannur district on Wednesday. The deceased have been identified as Mathukutty (58) and Vince Mathew (18).

Mathukutty is the brother of Mar Alex Taramangalam, the ordained Mananthavady auxiliary bishop.
The family had returned home last night after attending his ordination ceremony.

The incident happened as Vince lost control of the car while taking it out of the porch to visit Alakode town at around 10am on Wednesday. The car fell into the well, which was around 20 metres away, after breaking the well wall. While Vince was at the wheel, Mathukutty was seated behind.

Local residents struggled hard to break open the rear windshield of the car, and it took them 45 minutes to pull out the father-son duo. There was about 3mt of water in the 6mt-deep well. Mathukutty died by the time he was taken to the Alakode co-operative hospital. Vince was rushed to the Pariyaram Government Medical College, but he could not be saved either.

Mathukutty is the son of (late) Lukose and Annakutty. He is survived by wife Shaija, and his other children Ans, Lis (nurse, Germany), and Jis (MTech student in Germany). Balapuram native Albin is his son-in-law. After completing his plus-two, Vince had joined a nursing college in Mysuru. The funeral would be held at the St Antony's Church at Pathenpara at 4pm on Thursday.
