One child died, and over 10 students were injured after a school bus overturned at Valakkai in Chengalayi panchayat here on Wednesday. The deceased, Nedhya Rajesh (11), was a Class 5 student. The accident happened around 4.15 pm on the Thaliparamba-Iritty highway.
The police have registered a case against the school bus driver under sections 281 (Rash driving or riding on a public way), 125 (A) (Endanger human life or personal safety due to negligence or recklessness), and 106 (1) (Causing death by negligence) of BNS.
The school bus belonging to Chinmaya Vidyalaya in Kurumathur panchayat was coming down a slope and entering the highway when the driver lost control, and the vehicle toppled over.
Residents rushed to the scene and shifted the students to Thaliparamba Taluk Hospital. The body of the deceased has been shifted to the Government Medical College at Pariyaram. According to eyewitnesses, brake failure caused the accident.
