Thiruvananthapuram: Authorities have warned that temperatures in Kerala are expected to intensify in the coming days, marking an alarming continuation of the state's shifting climate patterns.

The state has already recorded unusually high temperatures in January. Kerala registered its highest-ever temperature in 2024, closely followed by 2023. Now, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that 2025 could break previous records.

On Monday, Kannur Airport recorded a scorching 36.6 degree Celsius, the highest in the country, while Kottayam came close with 36.5 degree Celsius on the same day.

Historically, Kerala’s peak heat was confined to March and beyond. However, in both 2023 and 2024, the state experienced oppressive heat as early as January—a pattern that seems to be repeating this year.

While intermittent showers may provide brief relief to some southern districts, the IMD has cautioned that they are unlikely to bring significant respite. High temperatures are expected to persist across all districts. Although the El Nino phenomenon has technically ended, its residual effects continue to influence the region's weather. The IMD has also pointed out that the vertical fall of sunlight, due to the sun's northward movement (Uttarayan), is contributing to the rising heat levels.
